Saaba is a village near Onagadougou (the capital of Burkina Faso). 2.100 children attend the local school, but they have to travel several kilometers each day to get there.
These children spend many hours travelling to and from school, which means they are unable to help their parents with housework. It also means they are unable to help care for their younger brothers and sisters.
The parents need the extra support at home, which means that these children often have poor attendance at school. This is also the main reason for the 25% drop-out rate.
With the
“Sponsor a bicycle” project, the NGO
Burkina Faso També wants to make it easier and quicker for children to get to school, so they will be able to spend more time at home without having to drop-out. Burkina Faso També sees the education of young children as a better and safer alternative to illegal immigration.
Petit Món has worked with
Burkina Faso També in this project: we have purchased and sponsored bicycles for the children of Saaba.
